What Animals Live In The Carlsbad Caverns?

The Carlsbad Caverns house a diverse array of native mammal species, showcasing the rich wildlife that thrives within the park. Among the notable residents are mule deer and cougars, commonly known as mountain lions. Additionally, the park is inhabited by smaller mammals, including ringtails, various species of ground squirrels, deer mice, and kangaroo rats. The presence of the desert shrew adds to the park’s ecological complexity. Remarkably, the Chihuahuan Desert pocket mouse, a species not previously documented within the park until the 21st century, has also been discovered, highlighting the ongoing exploration and expansion of our knowledge about the park’s fauna.

The Carlsbad Caverns is home to a rich tapestry of plant and animal life, making it a thriving ecosystem. Among the numerous species found within the park’s boundaries, the famous bats are a notable highlight. In total, the park boasts an impressive biodiversity, with approximately 67 species of mammals, 357 species of birds, 55 different reptiles and amphibians, 5 species of fish, and an astonishing array of over 600 insect species.
